AS PE - Olympic Games Preparation Notes

As we progress through the Olympic Games, you will need to understand the following term:-

  • Shop Window
  • Boycott
  • Ping-Pong Diplomacy
  • Reconciliation
  • Porpaganda
  • Corruption
  • Systemic Protest
  • Non-systemic protest.

You will need to:-

i) Define each keyword
ii) Find examples from within the Olympic games to illustrate your point.

• Shop Window- Describes propaganda used to which some cultures put their investments into sporting excellence.
• Boycott- Means to withdraw from Olympics or any particular sporting event due to social, economic, or political. - Boycott from the 1976, 1980, and 1984 games.
• Ping-Pong Diplomacy- This is a euphemism for American use of its table-tennis players after years of trade isolation.
• Reconciliation- Two countries to get back together again. - A 19 year old Japanese student carried the Olympic flame around the stadium at the opening ceremony at the 1968 games.
• Propaganda- Means that information is spread for the purpose of promoting some cause.
• Corruption- Means a lack integrity and honesty.
• Systemic Protest- Is an organised protest- Boycotts of 1976 Olympics.
• Non-systemic Protest- A planned political protest that involves hostages. - 1972 Munich Olympic games.

‘shop window’-

Definition- the term ‘shop window’ describes the use of propaganda to which some cultures put their investments into sporting excellence.

Examples.- in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Adolf Hitler camouflaged the Nazi’s racist character through hosting the Olympics, while hinting to others the idea of his racial hates.

Boycott.-

Definition- a boycott is when someone does not attend an event as an expression of protest.

Example- 18 countries boycotted the 1976 Montreal Olympic game, this boycott was over a refusal by the IOC to ban new Zealand after their national team ( the all blacks) toured all over the south of Africa, New Zealand had be banned from the Olympic games since 1964 due to its apartheid policies.

Ping pong diplomacy-

Definition- an example of someone substituting a mild indirect or vague term for one considered harsh, blunt or offensive.
E.g. ‘ he could use some work on his technique for he is not very good’

The ping pong diplomacy is a euphemism for the Americans for its use of table tennis players to break the ice with the republic of China after years of trade isolation by the Us. This was also seen has the US unofficially allowing china to return to international sports.
Example- the peoples republic of China had been outside the movement of the Olympics games during the 1960’s. following the world champions of 1971, the USA table tennis team visited china and paved the way for the trip by president Nixon.

Reconciliation-

Definition- the act of being reconciled.

Examples- a 19 year old student ( Yoshinoni Sakai) born on the outskirts of Hiroshima. Took part in a significant act of reconciliation of carrying the Olympic flame around the stadium during the opening ceremony at the 1968 summer games.


Propaganda-

Definition- the systematic propaganda of a doctrine or cause or of information reflecting the views and interests of those advocating, such a doctrine or cause.

Examples-.- in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Adolf Hitler camouflaged the Nazi’s racist character through hosting the Olympics, while hinting to others the idea of his racial hates.


Corruption-

Definition- the act to corrupt, or the state of corruption
