3) There are only a limited number of sports schools in England and Wales compared with certain continental countries. Give three advantages and three disadvantages likely to be experienced at an existing residential school of excellence in association football or gymnastics. (6 marks)

The advantages of having a large number of sports schools in a country is that it may increase the amount of elite performers in professional leagues in football, and a higher amount of gymnastic medals in the Olympics. It also allows a greater amount of young potential performers, which is good for the countries’ reputation within that sport. However, the percentage of gymnasts and footballers who make it to a professional level is very very low which will mean that’s many others will be disappointed if they are not chosen.

4) The National Coaching Foundation (now sports coach UK) was set up by the Sports Council in 1983. Briefly describe the work of sports coach UK. (3 marks)

This foundation protects the child abuse that occurs within England, giving them the right to sporting activities and giving them the protection they need. It is also used to create awareness for the protection of children. It also helps with the development of information, guidance and training, with the aid of the police.

6) The UK has been largely responsible for the development of racket games throughout the world. Why is Britain still not producing many performers of an international standard in tennis? (6 marks)

The lack of money for grass root performers. Some people do not have the money to pay for the expensive prices to join a tennis club. There is also a lack of facilities and equipment for such sports.
It is said that there is a new matrix programme for that aged between the ages of 7 and 14, but this is for a small amount of children. It doesn’t help with the lack of professional players competing in the finals of major competitions such as the U.S Open or Wimbledon. It is also said that there are now the best coaches working with many tennis players looking to be top.

1) To achieve excellence in sport, a high level of commitment, resources and expertise is necessary. Explain these three conditions, using illustrations from your own experience in a sport. (3 marks)

To achieve excellence in sport you have to be fully committed to the sport in which you are taking part. If you are not fully committed then you will not get everything out of training sessions and advice from coaches will not be undertaken. This means that you will not improve so you can’t therefore achieve excellence in sport.
Similarly if you don’t have the resources then you also cannot become excellent.
This is simply because you can’t become excellent at something without using the correct equipment. For example in football you couldn’t become excellent, the best you can be, without playing on a full size pitch with real goals.
Also having coaches with expertise helps massively as you could be a really good performer but if your receiving poor coaching then again you will not develop to the stage of excellence.

2) Suggest three ways that a games club might be elitist. (3 marks)

Structure
Function
Funding

3) There are only a limited number of sports schools in England and Wales compared with certain continental countries. Give three advantages and three disadvantages likely to be experienced at an existing residential school of excellence in association football or gymnastics. (6 marks)

The advantages of being at an existing residential school of excellence now is that one your there you have a big chance of progressing professionally. Because there are so few sports schools once you do make it into one you have the best chance possible of becoming something special. Because football is played so much all over the country it is hard to get noticed but a sports school is the perfect place to be notices which is why it is of such an advantage. Gymnastics is undertaken by a lot less people than people playing football so at a sports school the coaching and learning would be so specific that you would be very likely to develop into an excellent performer.
The disadvantage of the sports school could be one of massive disappointment. As there are so few only a limited amount of people will be accepted so people that are rejected would be massively disappointed and confused at what they should do next.

4) The National Coaching Foundation (now sports coach UK) was set up by the Sports Council in 1983. Briefly describe the work of sports coach UK. (3 marks)

The work of sports coach UK is to improve the quality of coaching in this country. They provide introductory packs which are a programme of key courses for practicing coaches, advanced workshops and diplomas for experienced coaches.

5) Explain the TOP sport project in the context of the Major Initiative. (4 marks)

The major initiative of the TOP sport project is to provide quality resources, training and equipment for teachers, and to develop football within key stage 2 level. Also it is hoped the programme will help develop extra-curricular provision and develop the links between schools and clubs.

6) The UK has been largely responsible for the development of racket games throughout the world. Why is Britain still not producing many performers of an international standard in tennis? (6 marks)

There are a number of reasons why Britain is still not producing many good tennis players. The main one is that the opportunity is not there for people from lower roots. Membership fees are really high at tennis clubs and so tennis is only on offer for those that can afford it. Furthermore tennis rackets, balls and paying for courts is also very expensive.
If you compare tennis with football, football appeals to a wider range of people which is why there are a lot more good quality English footballers.
Another reason why England doesn’t have any tennis players could be because of the stereotype that it is a game for white people. If you walk into a tennis club the majority of people are white. This means that if you were a good black tennis player you probably wouldn’t go to one of these clubs so again good quality players are not getting the chance. The LTA need to do something about this to improve the situation. They need a role model from an ethnic-minority to show that tennis isn’t just for white people but it’s for everyone.

The work covered this year will focus on England and Wales. The A2 will look at other countries. You should relate your experiences to the question to come up with an answer.

1) To achieve excellence in sport you need a high level of commitment, this is because without commitment you will not be able to obtain the level you are performing at, when at your best. If I had a higher level of commitment towards swimming club I would be able to perform how I was a few years ago, but as my commitment has dropped my performance level has dropped. Also to achieve excellence in sport you need resources, by this I mean you need to have provision of equipment and coaching at you local centre for you. In my local centre they have the resources I would need to achieve excellence. Expertise are necessary in achieving excellence because without someone teaching or coaching, who is at a professional quality you will not be able to create a strong team.

2) A games club could be called elitist if their only aim is to win- they will only take in the top performers, they will also only use top performers to compete as this will better their chances, however, this means that the slightly newer or less elite performers will not get the chance to compete.

3) The advantages with being at an already existing residential school of excellence would be recognition, the school will be well known and therefore will have a good reputation, and it will also have good qualified coaches to teach you which could benefit you later in life. And finally because gymnastics isn’t so commonly competed in England and Wales you will have a bigger chance of becoming noticed and succeeding.
The disadvantages would be because gymnastics isn’t so commonly competed in, there could be some trouble in finding properly qualified and committed coaches, on the other side, there are many football players, but this means that very few will get chosen to play professionally. Another disadvantage is that spaces are limited in these schools and therefore you must be at the very top skill wise and commitment wise if you want to join one of these schools, and there is always the chance of not getting in.

4) Sports coach UK is a charitable organisation and is the lead agency for development of the UK Coaching System. It is working to improve the quality and amount of coaches. They also try and inspire young people to become more involved in coaching.

5) The major initiative of the TOP sport project is to provide schools with equipment and resources to be able to develop and increase the number of sports in extra curricular activities as well as the extra curricular activities them-selves.

6) I believe the reason that Britain is still not producing many international standard performers in tennis is because they are mainly focusing on grass routes. Because of this there are a lot of younger players joining in with the sport but no one developing their skills far enough to become international level. Also I don’t think there are many qualified tennis coaches who are able to teach up to the international standard. Another problem with tennis becoming an international sport in Britain is that it is most commonly seen as a white middle class sport and therefore has made it hard for anyone who does not fit into this category to become part of a club and exceed to this level.

The three conditions stated all lead to a key in doing well in sport. Having the resources is very important. It is crucial for a participant to have the correct facilities and equipment in order for them to excel in what they have chosen to do. If a participant does not have a tennis court or a decent racket or a local centre where they can offer them all these things as well as quality coaches then the resources are not there for the performer. What is also needed is for the participant to have a high level a commitment. This means that the performer has to want to do well in their chosen sport. It is what the person is willing to sacrifice to get to the top, to get to the elite stage of he or she’s sport. Expertise is referring to two things. I think that expertise not only refers to the fact that the performer should have some knowledge and ability to perform as well as being able to perform theoretically as well, but I think it also refers to the expertise of coaches around them. Coaches are a crucial part of any sporting machine and without good quality coaches then performers will find it difficult to learn from them.

Whenever I hear of a club being elitist, then I instantly think it is referring to the ways in which the clubs only objective is to win at all cost. This means that a club usually tends to pick only the best players with the best ability, the best skill and the best technique. Winning is the only things in their mind and it throws out the whole ‘Sport For All’ concept.

The advantages of having specialist schools in football and gymnastics, is that the performer is given a greater opportunity and access to those important factors to go forward. The schools can offer the performer the provisions like football pitches and coaches of a high standard that are specialized in only Football Coaching. For gymnastics, because it is not such a main stream sport as football, it is important that performers that are aspiring to become gymnasts have more opportunity so that their pathway towards success is easier.
The disadvantages of having these sorts of schools is because there is such a limited number of them around the country, the schools are a lot more exclusive and it is much harder for a majority to get through and limits the opportunity for people that can’t or don’t have either money to support themselves or not even physically near to somewhere where they can go.

Sports Coach UK aims to provide the individual with help to improve, to let them shine and show them what they are really made of. Their main priority is the performer and always aims to encourage improvement and create a culture where all these things can be targeted and met. It also feels that the financial hurdles that are in the way for some people and aims to try and aid performers that need help.

The reason that this country has not produced Tennis players of a high standard i think stems from stereotype that tennis has be given. Too many people associate tennis as a sport that only middle class and upper class people play. Wimbledon is a prime example, the strawberries and cream and champagne image that it has been given has hindered potential performers. On a local level, the infrastructure isn’t in place. The membership prices for joining clubs is quite high, and the feeding from a local level to a regional level to a national level isn’t strong enough. The LTA does not provide sufficient help for the performers that have the potential but don’t have the necessary opportunity or provision to move forward.

1) To achieve excellence in sport, a high level of commitment, resources and expertise is necessary. Explain these three conditions, using illustrations from your own experience in a sport. (3 marks)

Commitment to a sport is highly important in the achievement of excellence. To optimise your potential you must have the dedication to put the sport first. This could mean sacrificing a certain part of your lifestyle; e.g. alcohol, smoking etc. or even having more training sessions than going for a night out.

Achieving excellence cannot be gained without resources. Without the correct tools, the product cannot be made. For example, without having a tennis racket or tennis court, a tennis player could not achieve excellence.

Expertise in a sport is crucial for development towards excellence. A player could have the raw ability but without correct coaching and guiding, excellence will not be gained. Expertise will usually come from the coach of the performer. The coach’s expertise, whether it is telling the player to refine his technique a little, or passing their experience from a certain situation in a sport (e.g. cup final), aides the player in all areas of their game.

3) There are only a limited number of sports schools in England and Wales compared with certain continental countries. Give three advantages and three disadvantages likely to be experienced at an existing residential school of excellence in association football or gymnastics. (6 marks)

Advantages:
• At an elitist school as only the best are allowed.
• Will have the resources and expertise in equipment and elite coaching.
• Professional teams will prefer to look at these schools as they have talented performer being coached at elite level.

Disadvantages
• Cost of school too high for most

4) The National Coaching Foundation (now sports coach UK) was set up by the Sports Council in 1983. Briefly describe the work of sports coach UK. (3 marks)

Sports coach UK is a charitable organisation and is the lead agency for development of the UK Coaching System. They aim to improve the level of coaching in the UK. They do this by providing introductory packs, which are a programme of key courses for trainee coaches, advanced workshops and diplomas for experienced coaches.

5) Explain the TOP sport project in the context of the Major Initiative. (4 marks)

TOPS Programme, and was inspired by the 1995 Government White Paper "Raising the Game," which highlighted the need for better school sports coaching. From 18 months to 18 years, the TOP programmes give young people of all abilities the chance to make the most of the opportunities that PE and sport can bring. They encourage all young people, including those with disabilities, teenage girls and gifted and talented athletes to thrive, as well as providing ongoing support to teachers and others working with young children.

6) The UK has been largely responsible for the development of racket games throughout the world. Why is Britain still not producing many performers of an international standard in tennis? (6 marks)

As Britain wants to be successful in a high number of sports, there is a low density of players playing at a high enough level to represent Britain on an international scene. However, there is not enough opportunity for the players, at grass root, that have the talent to reach a high enough level. Also, there is a lack of money reaching the grass roots of the sport. To have the provisions for tennis is very expensive considering cost of racket and cost of joining a tennis club. Many young performers have the talent but do not have the money to achieve their potential so there is a continuing loop of failure.
A main reason for the failure of tennis players is that tennis is still seen as a white middle class sport. There are very few players of ethnic minority that represent Britain in tennis so there are no role models for young players from an ethnic minority to aspire to. Also, if a talented black player walked into a tennis club, nearly all the members of that club would be white. This situation is not ideal as the black player could feel out of place or even intimidated. This means that players with the talent are not realising their potential. The LTA need to pump money into initiatives that reach local communities as this is where most of the real talent lies.

1.To achieve excellence in sport it is important to be completely committed, without commitment it is impossible to achieve the necessary level to achieve excellence because it will be unlikely that enough practice will be done or that enough energy will be put into the practices and without that you cant improve. Resources are important because without resources it is not possible to achieve excellence because the without the right equipment an athlete will never be able to perform to their full ability. For example in gymnastics it would not be safe for a gymnast to practice if they did not have the right equipment especially if they don’t have mats. Expertise is important in the sense that without a coach who is an expert it will be hard for the person being trained to become one also. For example it will be difficult for someone to explain how to do a handspring in gymnastics if they have never done one before!
2.
A how a club is structured could make it elitist, an elitist club chooses only the best players to be part of the team, because all they are interested in is being the best and winning. I don’t really get the rest of this question!

3.The advantages of a being at a sports school is that they are specialised and therefore athletes are more likely to achieve excellence and improve. Also there are so few schools that once you get into one it will probably be easier to make it professionally seeing as not everyone will have the high quality training that you will, however the problem with having such few school also means that this country is not producing as many high performers as it could be. For example it is extremely hard for a gymnast to get into any sort of school because of lack of schools. The disadvantage of Sport schools is the difficulty to get into them due to the number. Because of this many athletes that could become professional are being turned down, because of this the country is not turning out enough professional athletes.

4.Sports coach was set up in 1983 to improve the quality of coaching in the country and also to create more interest in the coaching. They provide beginner courses and courses for more advanced coaches they also have diplomas that can be achieved. This was an advantage as people began to recognise the importance of a coach in a team.

6.There are many reasons why England is not producing racket players of an international standard. At grass root levels there is not being enough done for racket sports to be available to everyone, one of the main problems is money, someone may be a brilliant tennis player but not able to afford to join a club or afford a coach, unlike swimming most people can pay to go and swim, the proper equipment for tennis can cost a fortune and not everyone has the money. Also racket sports are not that popular, most people would probably rather go for football especially as it seems that it is much easier to make it as footballer, because although it would probably easier to.
sorry sir i couldnt find anything out about number 5!
